DuchyEurope

Medieval principality of the Holy Roman Empire; Habsburg heartland from 1276, nucleus from which the Austrian Empire grew to dominate Central Europe.

Elevated from a duchy to the Archduchy of Austria in 1453 when Emperor Frederick III officially recognized the archducal title first claimed in the forged Privilegium Maius of 1359, transforming and superseding the duchy designation while the territory and Habsburg rule remained continuous.
