Earliest of Italy's four maritime republics; dominated Mediterranean trade with North Africa and the Levant in the 10th-11th centuries.

Conquered by the Norman Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia, in 1073, ending the Duchy of Amalfi's independence; subsequent revolts failed and the city was definitively absorbed into the Norman Kingdom of Sicily by 1131.
