The Kingdom of Diarra (under Kaarta's domination) was conquered by the Toucouleur Empire of El Hadj Umar Tall in 1854–1855, when Nioro du Sahel, Kaarta's capital, was taken and the Massassi Bambara dynasty destroyed; the Toucouleur state was itself conquered by France in 1890–1893.
