Dhar State (Puar/Pawar)

1728 – 1948
PrincipalityAsia

Maratha state of the Puar (Ponwar/Pawar) house on the Malwa plateau, seated at the old Paramara capital of Dhar. Udaji Puar cleared Mughal resistance in Malwa around 1729-30 and the Peshwa confirmed Anand Rao Puar in the fief by sanad; Dhar for a time ranked with Holkar and Sindhia among the rulers of Malwa. Pindari raids reduced it to little more than its capital before the treaty of 1819.

Sequestrated by the British in 1858 for suspected complicity in the 1857 rebellion and restored in 1860 minus the Berasia pargana; acceded to India in 1947 and merged into Madhya Bharat on 28 May 1948.
