Dewas States (Puar, Senior and Junior branches)

1728 – 1948
PrincipalityAsia

Twin Maratha states of the Puar house, founded by the brothers Tukoji Rao and Jivaji Rao who came into Malwa with Peshwa Baji Rao I. Uniquely among princely states the two branches shared one capital town, dividing even its main street between two administrations with separate water and lighting. The 1818 treaty tried to bind them to a single minister; the arrangement failed and after 1841 each branch ruled its own portion.

Both branches acceded to India in 1947 and were merged into Madhya Bharat on 28 May 1948, which became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
