Deptford Culture

800 BC – 700
CultureNorth America

Early-to-Middle Woodland archaeological culture of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina, named for the Deptford locale near Savannah, Georgia. Marked by sand-tempered check-stamped pottery, shell middens, mound burial, permanent settlements, and increasing reliance on cultigens.

Gradually gave way to successor Woodland-period coastal cultures (e.g. Swift Creek, Weeden Island) in the same region by the 8th century CE.
