Sovereign stateAsia

The Khmer Rouge state that ruled Cambodia under Pol Pot and the Communist Party of Kampuchea after capturing Phnom Penh in April 1975, forcibly evacuating cities into agricultural collectives in pursuit of a radical agrarian society.

Overthrown in January 1979 when the Vietnamese army and the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation captured Phnom Penh; the regime's rural remnants continued an internationally-recognized government-in-exile and insurgency into the 1990s.
