First Islamic sultanate on Java, founded c. 1475 by Raden Patah; led by the Wali Songo and instrumental in spreading Islam throughout the Indonesian archipelago.
Dissolved in 1568 CE when Hadiwijaya (Joko Tingkir), adipati of Pajang and son-in-law of Sultan Trenggana, assumed sovereignty and established the Pajang Sultanate as successor, reducing Demak to a vassal.
