Deli Sultanate

Founded in 1632 when Gocah Pahlawan, an Achehnese commander under Iskandar Muda, established himself on the Deli plain of northeast Sumatra. A tributary of Aceh and then Siak, Deli broke free by 1814 and, after an 1862 contract with the Dutch, grew immensely rich as the centre of the East Sumatran tobacco belt around Medan.

Monarchy abolished during the 1946 'social revolution' of the Indonesian struggle; the sultanate survives only ceremonially.
