The one farming people of the upper Amur: Mongolic-speaking, of Khitan descent by tradition, they grew grain in the black-earth valleys of the Zeya and Bureya, built stockaded towns, and took tribute from Tungus neighbours - which is exactly why Cossacks came looking for them.
Not an ending: caught between Russian raiders and the Qing, the Daurs were moved off the Amur to the Nen (Nonni) valley in 1654-56 and enrolled in the banners, and their abandoned town of Yaksa became Russian Albazin; some 132,000 Daurs were counted in China's 2020 census, with autonomous banners at Morin Dawa and Meilisi.
