A Gaelic overkingdom straddling the North Channel between western Scotland (Argyll) and northeastern Ireland (Antrim), at its height in the 6th-7th centuries, that merged with Pictland under Cináed mac Ailpín (c. 843) to form the Kingdom of Alba, the ancestor of medieval Scotland.
