The Kingdom of Dagbon was partitioned between Britain and Germany in 1899 and incorporated into the British Gold Coast protectorate and German Togoland; the Northern Territories became a British protectorate in 1901; the paramount chieftaincy (Ya-Na) survived colonialism and continues as a traditional institution within modern Ghana.
