Czechoslovakia

1918 – 1992
RepublicEurope

A federal republic uniting Czechs and Slovaks, formed from the collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918. Functionally interrupted 1939-1945 when Germany dismantled the state into the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and a nominally independent Slovak Republic, though the London government-in-exile persisted; restored in 1945 and re-established as a Soviet-bloc communist state after 1948.

Split peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993 (the 'Velvet Divorce'), following a parliamentary vote in late 1992.
