Late Preclassic urban center on the southern shore of Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico (present-day Tlalpan, Mexico City), notable for a large circular stepped pyramid. Possibly the oldest city in the Basin of Mexico, roughly contemporary with, and possibly in contact with, the Gulf Coast Olmec.
Declined in population and influence as Teotihuacan rose in the same basin around the turn of the era, and was ultimately buried under lava from the eruption of the nearby Xitle volcano.
