Cubeo (Kubeo)

1650 – present
Native nationSouth America

Phratry-builders of the Cuduiarí and middle Vaupés, set slightly apart from their Tukanoan neighbours by their phratry endogamy — marrying within the group rather than across it, unusual among the otherwise exogamous Vaupés peoples.

Hit by rubber-era flight from the Papurí toward the upper Vaupés in the early 1900s, the Cubeo nonetheless kept language and ritual nearly intact and number around seventeen thousand today in Colombia's Vaupés and Guainía.
