Crown of Aragon

1137 – 1515
ConfederationEurope

A composite monarchy uniting the Kingdom of Aragon, County of Barcelona, and later Valencia and Majorca, that built a Mediterranean empire stretching from Catalonia to Sicily and Sardinia.

Entered into a dynastic union with the Crown of Castile under the Catholic Monarchs from 1479 but retained distinct institutions; formally dissolved by the Nueva Planta decrees issued by Philip V of Spain between 1707 and 1716, which abolished Aragonese laws and parliaments and incorporated its territories into a centralized Kingdom of Spain.
