County of Barcelona

801 – 1164
Sovereign stateEurope

Carolingian frontier county in the Spanish March, held hereditarily by the counts of Barcelona from Wilfred the Hairy (count from 878). Through the 10th century the counts progressively broke free of Frankish overlordship while warring with the Caliphate of Córdoba, and by marriage and vassalage began absorbing the other Catalan counties.

Entered a personal union with the Kingdom of Aragon in 1164 (the Crown of Aragon), after which its history is subsumed within that of Aragon-Catalonia.
