Cossack Hetmanate

1648 – 1764
Sovereign stateEurope

The Cossack state born of Khmelnytsky's 1648 uprising against Poland — an elective military republic on the Dnieper that Ukrainians look back to as a national founding.

Its autonomy was whittled away by St Petersburg until Catherine II abolished the office of hetman in 1764 and the regimental order soon after.
