Cora & Huichol (Gran Nayar)

1300 – 1722
Native nationNorth America

The barranca country that Spain could not take — a pagan island in a Christian sea, ruled from the Mesa del Nayar for two centuries after the fall of Tenochtitlan.

Not an ending: Spanish troops seized the Mesa del Nayar on 17 February 1722 and confined the Cora in mission towns, but Náayeri and Wixárika communities still hold their sierra, and Huichol ceremonial life is among the least broken in Mexico.
