Red River Colony (Assiniboia)

Lord Selkirk's Scottish and Irish farming colony at the Forks of the Red and Assiniboine, planted in 1812 amid the buffalo plains and the fur trade.

Its Metis-led resistance under Louis Riel in 1869-70 forced terms; the settled core entered Confederation as the postage-stamp Province of Manitoba in 1870.
