Province of Canada

The uneasy 1841 union of French Canada East and English Canada West under a single parliament that lurched from deadlock to deadlock.

Its political gridlock drove the Great Coalition into Confederation; in 1867 it split back into Ontario and Quebec as founding provinces of the Dominion.
