The oldest English overseas possession, won at last for permanent settlement after centuries as a seasonal cod fishery ruled by 'fishing admirals'.

A self-governing Dominion that bankrupted itself in the Depression, reverted to British commission government in 1934, then voted by a razor margin to become Canada's tenth province at midnight on 31 March 1949.
