Lower Canada

The French-speaking, Catholic lower St. Lawrence valley, given its own elected assembly in 1791 but ruled by a British governor and oligarchy.

After the Patriote Rebellion of 1837-38 and Lord Durham's report, it was forcibly merged with Upper Canada into the Province of Canada in 1841.
