Napoleonic client republic in northern Italy, formed 29 June 1797 by merging the short-lived Cispadane and Transpadane Republics; the largest and most significant of Napoleon's early Italian "sister republics," covering Lombardy and parts of Emilia-Romagna and the Veneto.
Reorganized into the Italian Republic on 26 January 1802, with Napoleon as President.
