Chukchi

1000 – 1778
Native nationAsia

Reindeer herders of the tundra and sea-mammal hunters of the Bering coast — the one Siberian people Russia could not conquer, fought to a standstill across half a century of Arctic war.

Not an ending: after Russia abandoned Anadyrsk fort in 1764 and made peace in 1778, the Chukchi remained 'not completely subdued' subjects in name only; some 16,000 Chukchi live in Chukotka and neighbouring regions today.
