The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its Red Army / People's Liberation Army in the Chinese Civil War (1927-1949) against the Nationalist Republic of China. Driven from the Jiangxi Soviet by the Long March of 1934-35, the Communists rebuilt around Yan'an in the northwest, expanded their base areas during the war with Japan, and after 1945 swept the Nationalists from Manchuria and North China. By early 1949 they held everything north of the Yangtze; crossing the river that spring, they proclaimed the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949.

Won the Chinese Civil War in 1949, proclaiming the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949 while the Nationalist Republic of China retreated to Taiwan.
