• 1861 Occupation of Araucanía begins Chile launches the military 'Pacification of Araucanía', building fort lines south of the Biobío; over two decades of campaigns, famine and smallpox end three centuries of Mapuche independence by 1883.
• 1883 Treaty of Ancon Ending the War of the Pacific, the treaty of 20 October 1883 ceded Peru's nitrate province of Tarapaca to Chile and left Bolivia permanently landlocked; Tacna was returned to Peru in 1929.
