France's first attempted colony in North America, founded by Jacques Cartier at Cap-Rouge (near Quebec City) in 1541 and briefly reinforced by Jean-François de Roberval as France-Roy.
Abandoned by 1543 after a harsh winter, scurvy, and hostility from the St. Lawrence Iroquoians; France would not attempt a permanent Canadian colony again until Champlain's 1608 Quebec settlement.
