Cayor (Kajoor)

1549 – 1886
Sovereign stateAfrica

Cayor broke free of Jolof overlordship in the mid-16th century and became the dominant Wolof kingdom on the Senegalese coast, its damels (kings) contesting French commercial and railway expansion into the 1880s.

Damel Lat Jor's resistance to the Dakar-Saint-Louis railway ended in his death in battle in 1886, after which Cayor lost independent existence under French colonial oversight (formal annexation completed by 1886-1890s).
