PrincipalityAsia

Muslim nawabate of the Carnatic (Arcot state) on the Coromandel Coast, originally deputed by the Nizam of Hyderabad and later effectively independent; a central arena of Anglo-French rivalry in 18th-century south India.

Increasingly a British client after 1765; its civil administration passed to the East India Company in 1801, and the state was annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse in 1855.
