Captaincy General of Chile

1541 – 1817
ColonySouth America

A long thin colony pinned between the Andes and the Pacific, ruled from Santiago and forever halted at the Bio-Bio by the unconquered Mapuche.

Nominally subordinate to Peru, it declared autonomy in 1810; after royalist reconquest (1814) the patriots won at Chacabuco and Maipu, securing independence in 1818.
