A fortified, densely urbanized Epiclassic city on the Puebla-Veracruz border, built almost entirely without mortar and threaded by over 500 cobbled causeways; it controlled a key Gulf Coast-to-highlands trade route and the nearby Zaragoza obsidian mines, and hosted more ballcourts (24+) than any other known Mesoamerican site.
Peaked as a walled regional power in the Epiclassic power vacuum after Teotihuacan's collapse; abandoned after about AD 1050, reportedly following Chichimec incursions.
