Buri

98 – 183
CultureEurope

Germanic tribe (language akin to the Suebi, per Tacitus) living in mountainous, forested lands north of the Danube in what is now western Slovakia, just beyond the Marcomanni and Quadi. Ptolemy associates them with the Lugian tribal grouping.

Joined the Marcomanni-led invasion of the Roman Empire under Marcus Aurelius, made a separate peace with Rome, then faced retaliation from their former allies; after Marcus Aurelius's death the destitute Buri petitioned his son Commodus for peace (c. AD 183). Their subsequent history is unrecorded — Wikipedia notes they likely merged with other Germanic groups or joined later migrations (a Buri contingent is later attested settling in northern Portugal alongside the Suebi in the 5th century).
