Burgundians

278 – 534
CultureEurope

Germanic people first securely attested clashing with Rome in 278, when Zosimus records the Burgundi and Vandals defeated by Emperor Probus in a Rhine-frontier campaign; likely originated further east near the Oder-Vistula region. Later crossed into Roman Gaul as foederati and founded the Kingdom of the Burgundians.

Their later kingdom (established on the Rhine at Worms in the early 5th century, then relocated to Sapaudia/Savoy) was conquered and absorbed into the Frankish realm in 534; the name survives in the modern region of Burgundy.
