British Togoland

The smaller, eastern strip of former German Togoland administered by Britain from 1916 alongside the neighbouring Gold Coast colony; a League of Nations mandate then UN trust territory.

A May 1956 UN-supervised plebiscite (58% in favour) chose union with the Gold Coast; the territory joined the Gold Coast at its independence as Ghana on 6 March 1957, becoming Ghana's Volta Region.
