Bottle Creek

ChiefdomNorth America

Capital of the Pensacola culture: eighteen platform mounds on Mound Island in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the largest Mississippian mound complex on the northern Gulf coast — ranked "second only to Moundville" among Alabama’s Native American sites (National Historic Landmark, 1995).

The mound centre was abandoned by about 1550; the Pensacola culture’s descendant peoples endured along the Gulf coast into the historic era before being absorbed into other groups by the mid-18th century.
