A Muslim state on the eastern end of Sumbawa, Bima marked the eastern frontier of Islam in this part of the archipelago. Subjugated by Makassar's expeditions around 1619-1620, it formally adopted Islam in 1621 under Sultan Abdul Kahir and became a vassal of Gowa, sending annual tribute of rice, cloth, wood and horses. It later passed under Dutch suzerainty and was abolished in 1958.
Sultanate abolished in 1958 and integrated into the Republic of Indonesia.
