The first of the Turkish Anatolian beyliks to emerge from the decline of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, founded by Menteshe Bey in the southwestern Anatolian region of ancient Caria; like neighboring Aydin, it built a raiding fleet active against Venetian Crete and Latin shipping.
Progressively absorbed by the Ottoman Empire through the early 15th century, finally ending as an independent beylik by 1425.
