KingdomAfrica

Edo kingdom of the Niger forest renowned for its brass plaques and powerful obas.

The Kingdom of Benin was sacked by a British punitive expedition in 1897; Oba Ovonramwen was exiled to Calabar (where he died in January 1914) and the kingdom was annexed into British Nigeria, though the monarchy was restored in 1914 when his son Eweka II was enthroned — the Kingdom of Benin continues today as a traditional institution within Edo State, Nigeria.
