Bapedi Kingdom (Maroteng)

1650 – 1879
KingdomAfrica

Northern Sotho (Pedi) kingdom of the Maroteng dynasty in the Transvaal that successfully resisted Boer and British invasion until 1879.

Defeated by British forces under Sir Garnet Wolseley aided by c. 10,000 Swazi allies in November–December 1879; King Sekhukhune I was captured on 2 December 1879 and imprisoned in Pretoria, ending the kingdom's independence; the Maroteng polity was subsequently dismantled by British-Transvaal administration into small powerless units under Native Commissioners, with the process effectively complete by Sekhukhune's assassination in 1882.
