1394 – 1923
KingdomAfrica

Grassfields kingdom of the Tikar-descended Mfon at Foumban, expanded by Mbuembue against the Fulani and famous for Njoya's invented Bamum script.

Bamum accepted German protection during Nsangou's reign and Njoya became a loyal German client; Fumban was taken by a British column under Colonel Gorges in December 1915, the territory passed to France in 1918, and in 1923 the French deposed Njoya and banned his script. The Mfon of Bamum survives as a traditional monarchy at Foumban.
