Balhae was a multi-ethnic kingdom founded by Mohe people and Goguryeo refugees in Manchuria and the Russian Far East, recognized by Tang China as 'the flourishing land of the East' for its administration and culture.

Balhae was conquered by the Khitan Liao dynasty in 926 CE, which destroyed the Balhae capital Sanggyeong in a swift military campaign, ending the kingdom.
