Awadh (Oudh)

Autonomous Mughal successor state in the Gangetic plain founded by the Persian-origin Nawab Saadat Khan; grew into one of North India's wealthiest states and a major patron of Indo-Islamic art and architecture, formally elevated to a kingdom in 1819 before British annexation.

Annexed by the British East India Company in February 1856 on grounds of misgovernment; the annexation was a leading grievance behind the 1857 Indian Rebellion.
