Avar Khaganate

567 – 822
KhaganateEurope

Powerful Eurasian nomadic empire centered on the Pannonian plain that dominated Central Europe for two and a half centuries, defeating Byzantines and Franks until Charlemagne's destruction of the Ring.

Destroyed between 796 and 822 by a combination of Frankish campaigns under Charlemagne, which shattered its military power in 796, and final Bulgarian campaigns under Khan Krum that eliminated the remnant khaganate by 804–806; the last Avar groups submitted to Frankish rule by 822.
