Independent Horn of Africa port near modern Zeila — one of the principal seaports of 'Aethiopia' alongside Adulis and Mosylon per the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Its inhabitants, the Avalitae/Barbar, are described as having resisted annexation by the Aksumite kingdom and the Sabaean/Himyarite kingdoms of Yemen.
Attested continuously through Late Antiquity by later geographers (Ptolemy, Stephanus of Byzantium); precise decline undocumented. The site is now ruined.
Regional context for Horn of Africa Indian Ocean trade networks and Aksumite regional pressure.
