The dual Austro-Hungarian monarchy under the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, a major continental power and the third-largest state in Europe before its collapse after World War I.

Dissolved in October–November 1918 following defeat in World War I; the Hungarian Parliament unilaterally terminated the dual union on 31 October 1918, and the empire fragmented into the successor states of Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, and Romania (which gained Transylvania).
