Northeastern division of the Merovingian Frankish realm, centred on the Meuse-Moselle-Middle Rhine region with its political centre at Metz; formed when Clovis I's kingdom was partitioned among his heirs after 511, in contrast to the more Romanized Neustria to its west.
Alternated between autonomy and union with Neustria under successive Merovingian kings; its aristocracy (the Arnulfing/Pippinid line, ancestors of the Carolingians) became dominant after the Battle of Tertry (687) and ultimately supplanted the Merovingian dynasty outright in 751.
