Hispano-Celtic horse-riding, cattle-raising highland people of north-western Hispania (modern Asturias/Leon/Zamora, Spain, and Tras-os-Montes, Portugal), living in circular stone huts.
Conquered by Rome during the Cantabrian Wars (29-19 BC) and incorporated into Hispania Tarraconensis as the conventus Asturum; the ethnonym persisted as a recognized provincial population in Roman-era sources (e.g. Pliny the Elder's Natural History, c. 77 AD) into the 1st century AD.
Standard account of the Roman conquest and provincialization of Hispania, including the Astures and Cantabri.
