The Asante Empire was finally annexed by Britain following the War of the Golden Stool (1900); Asante was formally annexed as a Crown Colony on 26 September 1901, though Prempeh I had already been deported in 1896 (before the war), was restored in 1924, and the Asantehene was re-enthroned in 1935 — the Asante traditional state continues today within Ghana.
