A Bronze Age technocomplex of central and southern peninsular Italy. Archaeologists today most often reserve the name 'Apennine' specifically for the ornamented burnished pottery style of the later Middle Bronze Age (15th–14th centuries BC), preceded by the Grotta Nuova and Protoapennine B facies and succeeded by the 13th-century 'Subapennine' facies; the people were alpine cattle-herding pastoralists living in small, defensible hamlets across mountainous central Italy.
Transitioned into the Subapennine facies of the Late Bronze Age (13th century BC) and thence into Italy's Final Bronze Age/proto-Villanovan horizon (Villanovan culture already in this dataset).
